Welcome
to the SCOPA website ...
...
and in case anyone still does not know, SCOPA has
always stood for Samoa College Old Pupils
Association. A right misnomer if you ask me, for who
in their right mind would like to be called old, or
be reminded of advancing age, and in some cases, old
age even? But fifty years is a lot of living, and that places many of us in the much
maligned old age category.
Fifty
years also brings us to half a century of service to
the nation and to the world, by Samoa College. A
golden jubilee year that is for the founding of Samoa
College, whose name and badge of excellence in
learning and in all things, all us old and young
former students alike carry with pride. But there it
is, SCOPA, an association of former students of
Samoa’s flagship school, and who are preparing to
celebrate this great milestone in the life of a
school that has been the cornerstone of Samoa’s
house of learning.
Misnomer
or not, SCOPA has been around for almost as long as
the school itself. It has had a history of great
achievements on behalf of the school, but also of spectacular failures on behalf of itself. But
like the school whose name it carries, and which
continues to flourish in the face of official
neglect, SCOPA carries on serving in spite of its own
very nature and shortcomings.
And
by the way, the SCOPA extended family is much more
than the sum total of those who studied or loafed at
Samoa College. SCOPA also extends to include spouses,
children of spouses, sportsmen and women who play for
Samoa College teams, and last but by no means least,
any supporter who cares to pay $ 10.00 membership and
become a financial member. And these latter groups
happen to be an invaluable source of strength and
support for SCOPA, and your executive wishes here and
now to warmly acknowledge their towering contribution
to the SCOPA family.
But
all this is really by way of introducing the SCOPA
website, a concession to modern ways, and to the
determination of your Executive Committee to see that
all former students of Samoa College, whether they
consider themselves old pupils or young pupils, and
supporters of which there are many, are reminded that
they are part of the SCOPA family. A body that right
now is in great need of the energy and drive of Samoa
College’s far flung and multi-talented off-springs,
to write Samoa College’s Golden Jubilee year in
nothing but pure gold.
So
there! If you are a product of Samoa College, and
whether you call yourself an old pupil or a young
pupil, your school needs you as never before. And
remember that young or old, and whether you live to
be a hundred years or more, this is the only Samoa
College golden jubilee you and me are ever going to
see. So don’t miss it.
The
SCOPA executive, of which you will hear more later,
have prepared a program of golden jubilee events for
everyone to enjoy. And what could be more joyful than all former
Samoa College students and supporters joining their
fellow students of yester year to celebrate 50 years
of unsurpassed service, and of nurturing future
leaders, in a spirit of mellow friendship and
everlasting camaraderie.
So
join our Golden Jubilee festivities. We owe it to ye
old school. We owe it to our fellow travelers who are
no longer with us. And we owe it to ourselves.

English , ‘One good turn deserves another’.
