Subject: old Peace Corps friend
Congratulations on a very informative site. I served in Apia in 1968, teaching at St. Joseph's, but had several friends on the staff at SC. In sorting through memorabilia today I came across a 1973 letter from Peter Creevey, then editor of the Samoa Times and Samoa Beach Press. We lived under his family in a rented house in Papauta. In '73 he reported having three children (two since Taki, who was a toddler when we were there.) Other than an Encycolpedia Britannica artical on Samoa, I was unable to find anything about Peter on the web, but found your site with pictures of Douglas and Sina on the Samco NZ page. Runa was missing.
Anyway, I would greatly appreciate your forwarding this to any or all of the Creevey children as I would like to say offer greetings and find out about their parents. Peter especially was a big help and friend to us all in the Peace Corps' first years in Samoa. I'm pleased that he had such fine looking (now adult) children and that they graduated from SC. I would greatly love to hear from them.
Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Hi, I am taking the liberty of writing to you in an effort
to make contact with one of my former students. My name is Robert Travers and I am writing to you from the
United Kingdom. I was a teacher at Samoa College from 1982 -

I would very much like to make contact with her and would

Talofa Mrs. Va'a
Let me start by congratulating you and the team for the excellent website. I know this message is a bit out of whack with the launching of your History Project, but I hope it is not too late for congratulations. My other reason for writing is to find out how one can find out more info about an old student of the college. I refer to a student listed as Ailini Rintels? Do you still hold records of this person?
I hope to hear from you in the near future.
With best wishes,

Malo
le soifua. I wish to also add my sincere congratulations
to the many expressed before, to all of you our hard working
Executive Members and many who worked behind the scenes to make
the memorable celebrations last month- an event we all
enjoyed - it will be remembered for a very long time.
Malo, lave le galulue. May God reward you all with much
blessings in all your endeavours.
Now that our SCOPA puletasis (costly ones too - and I have duly
added the teuila as well - sorry Sister Sulu - need it for New
York in Summer as well) and our many T Shirts are hanging in the
closets, the Christmas trees and decorations have been put
away, the New Year celebrations are over, and, the History Book
(mine was bound at the Malua Printing Press) are laid out for
other generations to read - I cannot help but wonder when we
could see an update of the website and of course a summary of
the excellent celebrations we had. We must keep the
momentum by being informed of how we are going forward with the
many plans we heard. How much did we ever get to collect
during the celebrations?
Oh while I think about it - sincere thanks to Masunu Talapusi
for the free drinks and treat at Le Millenium - and ocassion to
wear our puletasis which were not ready by the time we arrived
on December 11th, 2003. I also wish to record here my
gratitude to all our brothers and sisters that turned up for
Masunu's challenge - it was wonderful to see you again wear and
again show off the uniforms for the celebrations. Special
thanks to the President for the kind gesture of presenting
me with his SCOPA cap (probably received free-of-charge from one
of his many pe'us in Aotearoa). Faafetai, faafetai lava le
agalelei.
We are looking forward to updates on the website which is still
being shown as the favourite
one on Samoalive.
Living overseas and away from our loved ones, we will
continue to pray for our country's recovery from cyclone Heta
and it is my prayers that all our beloved members did not
sustain too much damages. I sympathize with all those living in
American Samoa including our small Anglican Community there -
fortunately for them they are receiving a bit of help from the
Episcopal Church of the USA.
Ambassador Aliioaiga Feturi Elisaia, Maria and their two
daughters arrived last week to experience very cold weather - it
was snowing heavily when they got to New York.
They are all well nevertheless and the Ambassador has just
returned from Washington where he was amongst the privileged
people who were invited to be present at the President's State
of the Union Address and Reception.
The Revd. 'Ama'ama Tofaeono arrived later last week and is still
adjusting to the time difference and the freezing weather.
We are all well in this part of the world and will meet tomorrow
to again recapture the wonderful fellowship we had at our
beloved College in our beloved country.

My Samoa College experience – belated reminiscences
Calmar
Annandale
I
attended Samoa College in 1959 after six years of boarding
school in New Zealand. I had completed my School Certificate and
was facing the challenge, along with 2 other Samoa College
students, of tackling the University Entrance (U.E.) by
correspondence, as year 12 was not on offer in Samoa back then.
Sadly
my 2 peers, of whom I have very fond memories, dropped out along
the way. Although we were required to wear uniform we were
isolated from the rest of the school and pretty much ignored,
primarily, I think, because the teachers and the other students,
didn’t quite know how we fitted in (no wonder we became such
good friends). We were the most senior students but held no
formal status within the system. I shall always be grateful to
the Masiofo Fetaui Mataafa who always tried to make me feel a
part of the school, but lost her battle (possibly one of the few
in her highly successful career) to make me a prefect. Faafetai,
Fetaui!
With
the support and encouragement of my parents and help from such
teachers as Lorimer and Johnston, and my French tutor Madam
Nanette Marsack (apologies but memory of names is a bit hazy), I
was, to my great surprise, granted my U.E. and I believe I was
the first Samoan to do so from Samoa College.
Samoa
College was the springboard to better opportunities for me, such
as a Commonwealth Scholarship to study at Sydney University in
1961 and a long career helping overseas students make the most
of life and study in various Australian institutions, and more
recently as Student Counselor at the National University of
Samoa.
Thanks
you for the memories Samoa College and may you continue to
produce most of the top students in Samoa. Malo lava!

Annandale,
Siusega

It was a great joy to see the changes and wish to commend you for that. I vget visit this website everyday - sometimes twice a day to see what is happening as I have been receiving queries from some members iinei ile great U.S. of A. Have provided a few information as relayed to me by my children and for your information, the members in the mainland are wondering whether there is an association here. Of course you will understand that Ambassador Aliioaiga Feturi Elisaia and I are only here temporarily and could not provide the answer but there are some very keen members here who are still trying to get cheaper airfares to come for the celebrations.
Miss Marie Matai'a (who found me on the website) is coming next week to give me her contribution and will send that once received. Will get the funds transferred through my account with ANZ provided you send me the account number.
Now a bit of news:
Leao Akeripa Toleapaialii arrived safely in New York yesterday - he is visiting with his daughter Ioana and husband Sam Farthing (This two have just been blessed with another child - praise God). I believe that Leao attended a meeting in Jamaica and is on his way home.
Marie - I believe he is fine - in fact everyone is fine and Ambassador Aliioaiga and I will be going to New Rochelle tomorrow for toona'i and to catch up with what is happening back home. It will be good to see my hostel brother as we were amongst the first people staying there.
Will send you an update if any. Meanwhile, please know that this comes with lots of gratitude and blessings for everything you are doing for ACOPA & SCOPA.
God bless you all,
Taimalelagi F. Tuatagaloa-Matalavea
PS. Hearty congratulations to SCOPA NZ. I really admire the photos and get to see some of the friends and relatives that I could not place for a long time. Malo lava - e ese ma lo tou aulelei.

My days at Samoa College were memorable. As a
sports person, our college
First Fifteen rugby team were unbeaten on
wednesday and Saturday
competition, one of my memories of that team
was after our second game that
we won comfortly our coach Mr Lorimar was not
happy we never won a lineout
because our forward were all short, so he tried
Patric and Johnny Rasmassen
and myself the tallest in the team at the
backline,in the forward as the two
locks and a loose forward we had some fun, the
three of us were top
high/long jumpers in the country at the time,we
out jump everyone in the
competition, the sad thing about Patrick and
Johnny moved back to the back
line and I stayed as a lock for the rest of the
season,our Track and field
was the champion team every school and clubs
were trying to beat us as we
dominated most of the events I am looking
forward to meet all my team mates
of the time.
People like Patrick, Johnny,Dawn Rasmassen,
Gaualofa,and many others and
most of all our coaches Mr Lorrimar and Mr
Bachelor.
I left Samoa to study Aircraft
Engineering in Christchurch with NAC now Air New
Zealand 1966 and carried on with my Athletic and rugby, since
then I achieved my dreams, NZ decathlon
champion, National Coach 18years, International
track and field Lecturer for the IAAF Oceania region, My
family have also followed suit and represented NZ and Samoa in
Track and field.
Once again congratulations look forward to see you all in
December.

I wish to extend
my sincere congratulations to the Association members in

P.S. Ambassador Aliioaiga
Feturi Elisaia was quite impressed with the programmes of our
brothers and sisters mentioned above. He arrived on Monday
night, is doing fine and was formally welcomed yesterday
afternoon by the staff of the Samoa Mission to the United
Nations. Afioga Faalava'au Perina Sila (Deputy Ambassador) in
her welcoming speech, extended to the Ambassador their
best wishes for a successful assignment and to offer him
everyone's cooperation in carrying out his duties.
The staff greatly assisted the Ambassador in settling
into his new office, furnishing his apartment and preparations

I also wish to avail myself of this opportunity to congratulate
the SCOPA Executive members and the Webmaster for the updates -
noticed the change in the programme - looks good and will
continue to pray for you all. Ua leai la se savali e faaali ai

Anyway, many thanks for the updates.

I also noticed in the Samoa Observer posting
that Samoa College and St. Joseph had a go at each other.
History continues to repeat itself as I remember being suspended
as one who went along with the boys to fight the Marists in the
past. I went along to watch for the safety of my cousins
Keli Tuatagaloa and Laupepa Malietoa. I got suspended and the
two were expelled.
There ought to be a change of heart though and
students should be nurtured to fight through good achievements
academically and not physical violence. Personnel of both
schools and Executives of the Old Pupils Associations should now
look at ways to solve this recurring problem. There is much to
do for the healing of those involved as I firmly believe that
victims of any form of violence will become the perpetators of
violence in the future, whether directly through them or through
their descendants. Look for Spiritual leaders to provide
the healing as well.
God bless,
Yours in Christ and in Prayers,
Taimalelagi

a question from the SCOPA - Amerika Samoa Association:
Are
the list of entrants final? We have the lists of 1953 to

and some names are mis-spelt or placed in the wrong
years. Is it possible for us to have updated
lists...maybe we can assist you in finalising them? Ma

SCOPA

meetings, every Friday at 4:30pm at the Kentucky Fried

Hi there,
I just wanted to query you on the lists as
listed on your site. Does it include
people who made it to Samoa College, but did not attend? I
actually made it to enter in 1995,
(along with the Year 8 National Examination Dux of 1994
Vikash Sharma, who left for Fiji) but due to my father
becoming a minister in Australia, I
was unable to enter Samoa college with my class mates
from Leifiifi Intermediate. I really do want to become a
part of SCOPA as although I did not
attend, my name is still in the books as my friend Henry
